I went feature hunting yesterday afternoon and found a rally in support of Lt. Ehren Watada. Watada was court martialed on February 5, 2007 because he refused to deploy to Iraq. Despite below-freezing temperatures, several representatives from community groups came on 15th Street and JFK blvd.

Weather Hunting / Arrest

I started off my day hunting for weather shots in the city. I drove around the Penn's Landing / South Street Area first, and then downtown center city so I could make my way back to the Daily News. Well, I park my car around 13th street in Center City. I was running late and I was supposed to be back in the office by 3. When I got in my car, I pulled out of my spot and a septa bus comes by and scrapes my car in an attempt to get out of the way from the fire truck that was behind it.

AHH!

I'm ok though. My car still runs, I am alive and well and having fun. Here are some of the shots. The last one in this series is of a young man getting arrested by transit police for leaving his court hearing, I believe. It was in Center City, beneath the giant clothes pin. The police were upset that I was taking photos.

New Orleans

Over one year ago, Hurricane Katrina destroyed 200,000 Gulf Coast homes, displaced about 1 million people, and killed more than 1,600 people,. It was considered the greatest national disaster in recent American history.

Prior to my trip, I lived in disbelief as I along with the world watched people suffer and die due to breached levees and rising flood waters. Who was to blame? It was easy for me to pinpoint the government for their failure to provide timely relief. I don't particularly believe in blaming government for everything, so it was time for me to step up and see things out for myself.

When I got there, the business districts and the downtown areas all looked like hurricane never hit. In the words of a local resident, "You look at some of these places and you think... Katrina who?"

As soon as we drove into the 9th ward, it looked like a ghost town. House after house remained just as they were when the floodwater receded. It was like a ghost town with open doors, displaced furniture, and walls covered with growing mold. Markings in spray-paint indicated dates and bodies; human and animal life simply etched in numbers.

Our group worked with Common Ground Relief. At the time of the Hurricane, they provided immediate assistance to the residents of New Orleans, providing food, water, and supplies. Throughout the course of the year, they have had over 10,000 volunteers from around the world. I suppose you can add me to that number.

We gutted houses. Gutting means removing everything from the house until it's left in its basic frame.

As the week went on, I'd take a break and get lost in my thoughts. They went something like this: What's the point? This feels like a lost cause. It feels empty; it feels institutional. Certain houses are so unstable that they were probably going to get bulldozed in a matter of seconds.

I'd have to shake myself out of it and keep moving. I put my sweaty respirator on my face, zip up my broken Tyvek suit and got back to work.

After it was all said and done, I'm not going to romanticize the experience. It was hard, it was depressing, and it was discouraging. Thousands of people will continue to live with the damage for the rest of their lives. I leave New Orleans with fire and motivation because of the fact that not enough is being done to restore the city. I don't expect New Orleans to ever be the same as it was, it's just that not enough is being done. The bottom line is that American citizens were treated worse than animals. People aren't getting their basic needs met, and it's time that we all step up.

What a year.

You ever hear the phrase "never look back?"

Looking back is important as hell. Where and who you were, where you came from, what you did, what you didn't do : all of these determine who you are and who you will be.

I mostly never take the time to step back and analyze things that I've done. Mostly because i'm too busy. But here's where I take off my shoes, and rest my head.

2006 was awesome, mostly because I never stopped doing something. Through it all I've gained valuable insight as to who I am, what I want to do, and how I want to do it. The only thing for me to do is get better.

A new year is really nothing special. A year is a calculation, a measurement of time, a number. It's all about what you do and who you do it with that make your years/months/weeks/days/seconds really worth it.

Look back, learn, and move forward.

The Life of a Colleague: Nicole Saunders

Life, as Nicole Saunders puts it, is all about change and transition.

“Everything around me has changed,” she says, “and I’m in a period of pure transition.”

Recently for Nicole, life has brought her through new experiences; like living on her own in Philadelphia. Nicole, 21, was born in Scranton, PA. She was adopted as an infant and raised in sunny Richboro, Bucks County PA. She recently moved out on her own to a quaint house off of Stillman Street in the Art Museum area of Philadelphia. Nicole and her roommate Mary-Kate, 19, sit in their moderately furnished dining room discussing their night’s plan. Unwinding from a long day of classes, Nicole reaches for her pack of cigarettes and lights a match.

Nicole and Mary-Kate have known each other for 8 years. Erin, Mary-Kate’s sister, is Nicole’s best friend and is their connecting link. As Mary-Kate exhales from her cigarette, she tells a story of when they were younger, “I remember when we were younger. Even when they were 15 years old, I would hang out with Nicole the most. She was still dating Steve at the time, and I remember going ghost hunting in graveyards. We’d do devious adolescent things.”

From the days of teenage fun, to living as housemates in college, Nicole and Mary-Kate have grown closer together and redefined their friendship. Mary-Kate describes Nicole as someone who “knows how to use her imagination, a very visual and captured person. Nicole is very visually philosophical.”

Visually philosophical may be appropriate terminology to define Nicole. She hopes to make a career out of her photography. As she eats a bowl of freshly boiled pasta, Nicole explains her career objectives. “In the future,” she says in between bites, “I hope to have a solid career in photography. I really, really hope it works out for me in photography. I’d like to successfully sustain myself in any way, whether it is journalistic or commercial. I don’t really care. I just want to take pictures.” There is a brief pause as she holds the bowl of pasta. “I wouldn’t mind if I had a hot husband, but I won’t push.”

Nicole is recently single after 2½ years of dating. Steve Vernik, as Nicole describes him, is “the love of my life, thus far. We recently broke up. I’ve actually been thinking about how this [project] is not necessarily going to be a false representation of me, but rather just a very new one. The relationship has been my life and my world up until about a month ago.”

Needless to say, Nicole’s life is very busy with managing friendships, classes, school work, and her new job as a bartender. According to Mary-Kate, Nicole can get “very overwhelmed.” Rightfully so, Nicole has been working hard on doing a documentary on New Jerusalem, a recovery house that serves the North Philadelphia community. She says that it is “a crucial endeavor because it is very, very important for the people I’m documenting.”

On March 16, Nicole rides her bike to 2011 West Norris Street; just 20 minutes away from her house. New Jerusalem is more than just a house for addicts; it is a home for people that are just trying to better themselves. Nicole recognizes the mission of the house and focuses on “doing the assignment correctly, with ethics and respect in mind.” As she approached the house with her Canon 20D in hand, Sister Goretti comes outside to greet Nicole on this sunny Thursday morning. The two exchange greetings and walk inside the house for some breakfast.

“Sister Goretti! You’re always trying to feed me!” says Nicole in a loud but warm tone. Sister Goretti shuffles in the kitchen to prepare some toast and Indian applesauce. “You always come hungry so I feed you!” says Sister Goretti in response to Nicole’s exclamation. Nicole sits down and enjoys breakfast as she waits for her next photo opportunity. “This morning we had church service.” Nicole explained, “It often gets intense.”

Nicole’s photography has proven to be a very important aspect of her life whether it be documenting New Jerusalem, or shooting some portraits for fun. Her photography has taken her to Chris’ Jazz Café in Center City, Philadelphia for a “time capsule” assignment. Her idea was to shoot smoking in bars. Nicole, equipped with her trusty camera and martini, began shooting and socializing with the people at the bar.

“I just got my first bartending gig not too long ago,” she said. “I really have gotten into it. I love learning how to make new drinks and seeing how my customers respond to them. I also think that knowledge about alcohol and mixology is a really cool one to have. I read up on it a lot. That must make me seem like a lush, but I’m honestly not.”

As the night went on, it was easy to see that Nicole is a bright, and cheery individual. Mary-Kate comments on how she enjoys Nicole’s favorable personality, “When Nicole is happy, she’s really happy and it spreads and shows. She’s loud about it and it’s very contagious. She’s vocal, and that’s a very good thing.”

On a quiet night in her humble home on Stillman Street, Nicole sits down in her dining room chair and gets her haircut from her friend, Sabina. Sexy and fun, is what Nicole said to describe the haircut. The change in Nicole’s appearance symbolizes the changes she’s going through in her life.

“Who I am now really doesn’t reflect who I’ve been my entire college career,” said Nicole. “But I suppose that is a positive and a negative. Change is good.”

I had the opportunity to spend time with my classmate, Nicole Saunders on Tuesday night. We spent the evening getting to know each other over a cup of Chai Tea.

My World

My world is my work. I'm a work-a-holic and I try my best to not sit still. As of late, this is how I've been feeling. Tired, ready to scream, stressed. You know how it goes.

The view of the New York City skyline from Jersey City, NJ where I was born and raised. Jersey City makes up a large part of who I am. It isn't exactly the prettiest city, but there's nothing like walking down the street in your own neighborhood and seeing your homeboys/homegirls.

This is Reice, my dog. She is my world. We've been together for seven years now. She enjoys playing hide and go seek, chasing cats, spooning, being fat, and sleeping.

My friends are my world. They are a constant reminder of why life is an amazing gift. This is JR and Jamie - friends of mine since highschool. We spend most of our time driving around in New York City and trying new things. They don't take anything seriously, even the idea of me being a photographer. Love you!

My world is volunteerism. Dominique is my little brother through the Big Brother Big Sister program. He goes to Dunbar Elementary School and is currently in 8th grade. I see him every week and we usually play a game of Guess Who. He beat me 3 times in a row today - I really was trying to beat him too.

This is my best friend, my hero, my teacher: this is my mother. She is the one thing that I truly cherish, appreciate, and love above all things in my life. My mom is my world.

It was a gorgeous Saturday afternoon in Rittenhouse Square. I was physically ready with my camera and a pad of paper. Mentally, there were a lot of thoughts going on in my head. I looked at this assignment simply as a chance to meet new people. The warm sunny day made people more open to the idea of submitting their soul to me for five minutes. Everyone seemed to forget it was January.

meet: Leonard
Leonard has been living in Philadelphia for 10 years. Residing particularly in South Philadelphia, Leonard comes to Rittenhouse Square on nice days to sit and play chess with anyone who wants to play with him. "North Philly," he said, "is my favorite part and my least favorite part. It's both good and bad."

meet:Darnelle
Darnelle Radford, 25, has lived in Philadelphia for 6 years. Darnelle is an Artistic Director for a Theater Company called Representative Theater Company. His favorite part about Rittenhouse Square is the fact that it's a big piece of nature and a big piece of history. When asked about his least favorite part about the Square, he replied, "Although I'm a part of it, it would have to be the trendiness of it." Alyssa Finlay, 18, is a first year Jazz / Music Education Major at Temple University. Because of the beautiful weather, Alyssa decided to come to Rittenhouse Square to get some homework done. When asked about her favorite part of the park she said, "I love people watching." She took a moment and noticed the little kids playing nearby, "Oh, and I love little kids." When asked about her least favorite part of the park she replied, "How can I phrase this delicately...a lot of the people here are yuppies. Some of them are not very nice."

Kim Tremblay, 35, has lived in Philadelphia for 5 years. She and her daughter, Sydney, 9 months, came to Rittenhouse Square to sit in the sun and play in the grass. Kim, a professor at University of Pennsylvania, said, "My favorite part are the zalias that come in the spring time."

Wesley
Wesley Emmoms, 78, has been a resident of Philadelphia for 54 years. He particularly enjoys sitting at one bench and watches people come by. "At night," he started, "I sit and watch the pretty lights in the trees. At day I watch the girls." He also enjoys the one bench because it's directly across the street from Curtis Music Hall. According to him, He has been to Curtis 2500 times for the free shows. When asked about what his least favorite part about Rittenhouse Square he responded, "Some jerk sits down across from me and mouths off at the police."

Lauren Rex, 23, has lived in Philadelphia for 5 years. She currently is an employee at Daffy's and works on designing window displays. Today, she came to Rittenhouse Square to read and people watch.

Ben Zuckerman, 64, has lived in Philadelphia for 6 years. He is a lawyer and enjoys photography as a hobby. Today, he comes to Rittenhouse to smoke a cigar and enjoy the nice weather. He lives on a nearby corner and considers the Square to be his own front yard. When asked about his favorite and least favorite part about the park he responded, "My favorite part is the mix of people who enjoy it (the park) and use it. My least favorite are the people who leave trash."

Frank porter, 56, has been living in Philadelphia for most of his life. He works as a painter for business buildings and workplaces. Today, he comes to Rittenhouse after a long day of work. "Rittenhouse is nice, relaxing. You can meet people, if that's what you want to do." When asked what his least favorite part about the park he responded, "I Like it. I really like it. There is no bad part about it. People come down, mind their own business and enjoy themselves. It's very nice."

Philadelphia, Past and Present: The Experience

Shooting this afternoon was really interesting. Being able to see the changes of the places I've picked from the 1960s to now is amazing. You ever watch a movie and they warp time? The experience felt a little something like that; something movie-like.

I've never shot through the eyes of another photographer before. By doing this assignment I was able to figure out where the photographer was exactly in order to produce the photo. I was able to figure out what lenses were used with what angle and at what time of day. All of it was really interesting.

QUEZON CITY, Philippines -- A little boy named Kenneth stands in front of a protest line in fight of low wages and long working hours. The workers of Peni-J make bookbags.

TARLAC, Philippines -- A little boy stands in front of a memorial site at Hacienda Luisita, a 6,300 hectare farm land where workers have been protesting for over 13 months against unjust working conditions. On November 4th, 2004, 7 people were killed, 72 wounded, and 110 were arrested in a protest that consisted of 6,000 farm workers.

BANAUE, Philippines -- Ifugao children sing words of thanks for a donation of school books, writing utensils, and toys.

TARLAC, Philippines -- The children of Hacienda Luisita eat the flowers grown on the farmland. Sugarcane is the crop that is mostly grown in this area.QUEZON CITY, Philippines -- Filipino youth give the middle finger to the Americans.

PAKIL/LAGUNA, Philippines -- Three children of Pakil Laguna, Mike, Jack, and Colin, cool off in a sewer drain connected to a nearby community pool. The three used the sewer as a slide.
